Caracortado Has Plenty Of Options

Caracortado, winner of Saturday’s Del Mar Mile, came out of the race showing no effects, trainer Mike Machowsky said. Decisions on what’s next for the 4-year-old gelding will be made at a later date.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” Machowsky said. “There are some open company races for him at Santa Anita, I could ship (out of state) or I might get conservative and just run him (against state-breds) in the Cal Cup.

“I want to keep him sound to race again as a 5-year-old and maybe bring him back here for one of the other races.” Caracortado was nominated for both the Pacific Classic and the Pat O’Brien on the main track as well as the Mile on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

“He’s trained so well on this track, that I really thought about the Classic,” Machowsky said.

Marty Wygod, owner of Mile third-place finisher Calimonco, was at trainer John Sadler’s barn, consulting with Sadler assistant Larry Benavides and reported Calimonco, beaten a half-length at odds of 12-1, had come out of the race well.

“There was just a moment’s hesitation when he couldn’t get through at the top of the stretch and that was the difference or he might have won,” Wygod said.  “We were happy to see him run the race he did and he definitely showed he’s ready to step up to the next level.
