Capital Account Defeats Coil in Pat O'Brien
Rallying from off the pace under a well-timed ride by jockey David Flores, Capital Account wore down stablemate Coil in the final furlong to win the Grade II, $250,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes Sunday, the day of the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic.
Always within striking distance of the lead as Don Tito, Camp Victory and Coil dueled on a slow pace, Capital Account moved into serious contention entering the stretch from the outside and proved best in a long drive, prevailing by a half-length over Coil, the 3-2 favorite under Rafael Bejarano. Both Capital Account and Coil are trained by Bob Baffert.
Camp Victory, second choice at 8-5 with Joe Talamo, was third, a length behind Coil, with Bruce’s Dream fourth in the field of six sprinters.
Capital Account, a five-year-old son of Closing Argument owned by The Thoroughbred Legends Stable of John Hardy III and Olin Gentry, stepped the seven furlongs in 1:21.56, with a final quarter in a blazing 22.68.
Third choice in the wagering, Capital Account paid $7.60, $3.40 and $2.60 and earned $150,000 for the victory, his fifth in nine starts. He now has a career bankroll of $347,080. He was third in the Bing Crosby Stakes July 29 behind Eclipse Award-winning sprint champion Amazombie.
Coil, the 3-2 favorite, paid $3.20 and $2.40, while Camp Victory paid $2.40 to show.
