Canterbury Park: Carmona, Robertson get 5 wins apiece

It was an evening of multiple wins for trainers, owners and jockeys Saturday night at Canterbury Park with Mac Robertson conditioning five first-place finishers and apprentice jockey Serafin Carmona getting five victories.

Robertson’s night included wins in three of the five featured handicaps.

Carmona, who began his riding career at Canterbury in 2023, won his first stakes when Xavey Dave, trained by Robertson, finished first in the $40,000 Ralph Strangis.

Carmona already had won two starts earlier Saturday. He followed the Ralph Strangis with his fourth win on the eight-race card with Cupids Crush, also a Robertson trainee, in the $40,000 Mr. Dale Filly & Mare Turf. Cupids Crush paid $8.60 to win, the largest price on a predictable night.

Carmona closed out the card with his fifth win aboard favorite Firenspice for trainer Stetson Rushton.

Robertson’s wins included Wynn Trip in the first race, Mister Muldoon in the third, Xtreme Diva in the $40,000 Frances Genter followed by Xavey Dave and Cupids Crush. Each of the first four winners was the wagering favorite.

Carmona also was aboard Wynn Trip and Mister Muldoon. Eduardo Gallardo rode Xtreme Diva, owned by Vicki and Mike McGowan’s Xtreme Racing Stables. Xtreme Racing also owns Mister Muldoon and Cupids Crush.

“At the end of the day, it ain’t about us,” Mike McGowan said. “It’s all the trainers, all the jockeys, ... all the people on the backside. That’s where the success comes.”

Gallardo had two other wins on the program. Street Warrior cruised to an easy, nine-length victory for trainer Joel Berndt and owner-breeder Suzanne Stables in the $40,000 Victor S. Myers. The 3-year-old tracked stablemate Frosty View up the backstretch and around the turn of the six-furlong sprint before striding by effortlessly and drawing away. He paid $3.60 as the favorite.

Street Warrior won his first start June 15 by 14 1/4 lengths and has earned $43,800.

“He’s a good one. He showed it in his works before he ever ran,” Berndt said. “He’s very intelligent. He just does things with ease.”

Gallardo then won the fourth race, also for Berndt, on Midnight Current, who won the $40,000 Minnesota Turf Distaff for the third consecutive season.
