B/L Racing Stable and Michelle Lovell’s Canon Man, trained by Michelle Lovell and ridden by Kerwin Clark, broke in stride to make the pace and held on willingly in the late stages to win Sunday’s six-furlong $45,000 optional claiming feature at Fair Grounds by 2 3/4-lengths from Lawrence Johnson’s late-running Tacky Angel.

That rival, unhurried early, rallied to be easily second best, finishing 3 3/4 lengths to the good of Heiligbrodt Racing Stable’s Heavenville.

Canon Man toured the three-quarter mile distance in 1:10.95 after establishing early fractions of 22.42 and 45.99, increased his career earnings to $121,100 with his fourth win in nine lifetime starts, and returned mutuels of $4, $2.60 and $2.20.

Tacky Angel paid $5.60 and $3.60 as the runner-up while Heavenville returned $2.20 for the show position.
