Tony Calabrese, of Toronto, won Derby Wars $10,000 Game on Saturday after beating out 49 other players to take the top spot. He had been in 10th place before the last race, with only $49.70 in winnings.
Calabrese’s big win came after picking the 5 year-old mare Top Kisser in the Spring Fever Stakes at Santa Anita, who paid $30.20. “It was the key to my victory,” said Calabrese. “Before the race went off I was sitting in tenth and debating between choosing the eventual winner and runner up.  I went with Top Kisser since the price was better, and got lucky that the other nine players ahead of me ended up on other selections.”

Apart from playing contests on Derby Wars, Calabrese, known as "funkymonkey" on the leaderboard, has been a handicapper for the last ten years. “I wish I had the key to doing this successfully,” he said. "Unfortunately, I have yet to figure the whole thing out...you just take your shots and hope that the stars align for you on any given day.  Luckily for me they did this past Saturday.”

The Canadian late closer couldn’t be happier about his Saturday win. "The big victories are few and far between,” said Calabrese, “But when they do happen they are sweet indeed.”
