Camacho Breaks Leg in Training Mishap

Jockey Samuel Camacho, Jr., who lost his status as an
apprentice only this past May, will be out of action for an extended period of
time after breaking his leg in a training mishap on Wednesday morning. He is
recovering at the Jersey Shore University
Medical Center
in Neptune, New Jersey.
“It was a bad break. He had surgery last night and will be in the hospital until Friday,” Mike Monroe, his agent, said on Thursday. “The doctors told him he won’t be able to ride again for three to six months.”
Monroe said that Camacho was getting ready to breeze a horse
on the turf course for owner/trainer Dennis Manning when the filly wheeled and
unseated him. The rider landed awkwardly, fracturing the tibia bone in his leg.
“It’s unfortunate, but we all know that it’s part of the game,” said Monroe, who added that business was picking up for his client.
Camacho, who won 34 races and more than $1.2 million in
purses at the 2012 Aqueduct meet, has 40 victories from 365 mounts with $1,495,082
in earnings so far this year.
