Report: California-based trainer Gary Sherlock dies at 73

Longtime California trainer Gary Sherlock, who trained multiple Grade 1 winner Intangaroo, died Sunday after battling cancer.

He was 73.

Sherlock, who was a San Francisco native, had parents that were involved in horse racing, according to the Daily Racing Form, which first reported the news. Sherlock's mother, Mary, was a racing official in Northern California, and his father, William, was a jockey.

Sherlock started out training Quarter Horses in 1966, and had success with such runners as Azure Three, winner of the 1977 Los Alamitos Derby and American Jet, winner of the 1980 Doc Severinson Handicap.

Sherlock switched to training Thoroughbreds in the early 1980's. His most successful season was in 2008, when he sent out the filly Intangaroo to win three Grade 1 sprints - the Santa Monica Handicap at Santa Anita, the Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs and the Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga.

In 2016, Sherlock won the Santa Monica Stakes (G2) with 64-1 Lost Bus. That same year, he saddled his first classic starter in Uncle Lino, who finished 7th to Exaggerator in the Preakness Stakes.
