Long-time Southern California-based trainer Jeff Mullins is currently in the process of setting up a division at Gulfstream Park, where he was on hand Sunday morning to observe the workouts.

“Every now and then you have to branch out a little bit,” Mullins said. “We just decided to try something new. It’s nice to go to a place where you don’t have to move, [the year-round schedule] is a plus.”

Mullins sent four horses to the racetrack for workouts Sunday morning, all four are owned by Red Baron’s Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal LLC.

“We have six now and another six coming until the Championship Meet ends. Hopefully then we can get a few more stalls,” Mullins said.

The 56-year-old Mullins, who Equibase shows as having his first starter in 1981, has saddled 1,655 winners in his career. At the current Santa Anita meet, he is hitting at a 21 percent clip with a record of 51: 11-6-10 and purse earnings of $551,800.
