Completing his major preparation for the Grade I, $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes Oct. 1 at Santa Anita, California Chrome worked seven furlongs in 1:26.40 over his home track Saturday morning at Los Alamitos.
Under regular exercise rider Dihigi Gladney, the son of Lucky Pulpit went the opening quarter of a mile in 25.20 seconds, the half-mile in 49.20, five furlongs in 1:01 and three-quarters of a mile in 1:13, according to Los Alamitos clocker Russell Hudak.
“I thought the work was just perfect,’’ said trainer Art Sherman. “He’s ready to go.’’
Sherman said California Chrome, who is owned by Taylor Made Farm and co-breeder Perry Martin, will ship to Santa Anita Sunday morning and will be schooled in the paddock before he aims for his 11th graded stakes victory in the Awesome Again.
Based at Los Alamitos since January, 2014, California Chrome has won 14 of 23 and earned $13,252,650, making him the richest thoroughbred in North American history. He won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness en route to Horse of the Year honors in 2014.
