Bruno gets two-year prison term

Former New York state Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno, who represented Saratoga Springs, New York and championed many Thoroughbred racing issues, was sentenced Thursday to two years in federal prison for using his political office for personal financial benefit.

Once the state Senate’s most powerful Republican, he resigned in June 2008 and was indicted in January ’09 on eight counts of wire and mail fraud under the honest services statute. He was convicted last December 7 on two counts and acquitted on five others. The jury remained deadlocked on one other count.
