Brown Eyed Betty Wins at Churchill Downs
Clifford Grum’s homebred Brown Eyed Baby took the lead shortly after the start under Calvin Borel and held off Visavis by a half-length to win Thursday’s $47,299 feature for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Cecil Borel, Brown Eyed Baby ran the six furlongs on a fast main track in 1:11.50. The victory, the fourth in eight starts for the daughter of Mineshaft, was worth $27,480 and increased Brown Eyed Baby’s earnings to $130,868.
Brown Eyed Baby, third choice in the field of six, returned $7.20, $3.20 and $2.60. Visavis, ridden by Jamie Theriot, returned $3.60 and $2.80 and finished five lengths ahead of favored Fuzzy Britches, who paid $2.20 to show under Freddie Lenclud.
Racing resumes Friday night at 6 p.m. (all times EDT) with an 11-race program on the fourth “Downs After Dark” program of the Spring Meet. There will be a three-day Pick 6 carryover of $18,844 on races six through 11 with post time for race six at 8:32 p.m. and a two-day Super Hi-5 carryover of $34,825 on the 11th race (11:20 p.m. post time) in which the first five finishers must be selected in order.
The meet concludes Sunday, highlighted by the return of 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in the Firecracker Handicap Presented by Thorntons (GII). Two stakes are scheduled Saturday: The Locust Grove (GIII) and the Bashford Manor Presented by Fasig-Tipton (GIII). Post time both days is 12:45 p.m.
