Brereton's Baytown, pulled up in W.V. Derby, is recovering
Brereton's Baytown, who came out of the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby on Sunday with a fractured sesamoid bone, is recovering after surgery on Monday.
Trainer Paul McEntee told Horse Racing Nation in a text late Monday afternoon that Brereton's Baytown had a screw inserted during surgery on Monday. McEntee expects that he will return home from the hospital on Tuesday or Wednesday. He will take between 45 and 60 days of stall rest, then have another x-ray of the injury.
Brereton's Baytown chased toward the rear of the field for much of the West Virginia Derby before being pulled up past the furlong marker by jockey Marshall Méndez and taken off in the equine ambulance. Early Monday, McEntee told HRN that Brereton's Baytown was going in for surgery with Dr. Wes Sutter.
Brereton's Baytown, a 3-year-old gelded son of Upstart, has a record of 15: 2-0-0 and $157,391 in earnings. He has won races at Charles Town and Laurel. He has faced graded-stakes foes in five of his last six starts, including finishing fifth of eight behind Mo Plex in the Ohio Derby (G3), his last start before the West Virginia Derby.
