Breen: 'Game-time decision' for Courvoisier in the Jerome
Courvoisier is listed as "possible" for Aqueduct's Jerome, a Saturday stakes that offers 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the top four finishers.
Trainer Kelly Breen told Horse Racing Nation Monday that the call on whether to enter him will be "a game-time decision."
Courvoisier, a Tapit colt, broke his maiden on fourth try on Dec. 2, going 1 1/8 miles at Aqueduct to win by a neck. The race before, he lost by a nose at a mile.
"He likes to hang with his competition," Breen said. "He doesn't want to win by much. He got beat a photo and he won a photo in his last two races. He's a nice, big-body, good-looking horse. Just needs that distance."
The next step, Breen said is to talk to the owners, Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings and James Spry. "We don't know what we're doing yet."
As for other options, "a couple of the races that came up, a couple in Maryland, Parx, they were all seven furlongs, and we just won a mile and an eighth, so. The Jerome is a mile. It's kind of on my radar, but at the same time, I want to see who's running in it."
Meanwhile, Couvoisier has been working at Belmont Park, breezing five furlongs in 1:01.44 on Friday.
"He's training well," Breen said, "but I'm just trying to keep my options open."
