Breeders’ Cup odds: See the changes in futures for 9 races

Photo:

Flightline held firm as the favorite, Epicenter shortened as the second choice. Life Is Good drifted as the third. That was a snapshot of futures betting during the past week for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

There were, however, significant changes in betting for four other divisions attracting action at the Costa Rica-based bookmaker Bovada, where there were new favorites in the Turf and the Turf Sprint.

Odds were updated Sunday for nine Nov. 5 races in the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland.

Classic. The top three names did not change, and neither did the 2-3 odds for the impressive Pacific Classic (G1) winner Flightline. Travers (G1) victor Epicenter went from 6-1 to 5-1. Life Is Good, who finished first in the Whitney (G1), drifted from 5-1 to 7-1. Art Collector, the winner last month of the Charles Town Classic (G2), opened as the 12-1 fifth choice for the 1 1/4-mile race worth $6 million.

Distaff. Alabama (G1) winner Nest held steady at 6-5 (actually plus 135). So did the odds for 11 other fillies and mares. Two names were added to the betting options for the Distaff. Blue Stripe and Shedaresthedevil, who finished first and third, respectively, in the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) last month at Del Mar, each opened at 16-1.

Dirt Mile. Jack Christopher, who was triumphant in the H. Allen Jerkens (G1), was cut from 8-5 to 3-2 to win a race that might be filled with the horses trying to avoid Flightline in the Classic. Life Is Good went from 3-1 to 7-2, and surprising Forego (G1) winner Cody’s Wish moved from 9-2 to 4-1. Olympiad, who rebounded from his defeat in the Whitney to score in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), moved onto the betting list at 5-1.

Sprint. In spite of his upset loss as the odds-on favorite last month in the Forego (G1), Jackie’s Warrior shortened from 7-4 to 8-5 (actually plus 165) to win the six-furlong race Nov. 5. The only other change among the eight listed horses was with Pat O’Brien (G1) victor Laurel River, who went from 12-1 to 8-1.

Filly & Mare Sprint. This was the one division in which there were no changes. Goodnight Olive, whose five-race winning streak included the Ballerina Handicap (G1) last month, held firm as the 3-1 favorite to finish first in this fall’s seven-furlong race.

Turf. Thanks to his half-length victory Saturday in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1), Luxembourg jumped from a 12-1 long shot to a lukewarm, 5-1 favorite to win the 1 1/2-mile race worth $4 million. Defending Turf winner Yibir, who has not raced since he won a Group 2 race in July at Newmarket, remained 6-1 but dropped to the second choice. Mishriff, who was second to Baaeed in the Juddmonte International (G1), went from a 6-1 co-favorite to 13-2 third choice.

Mile. While 2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Modern Games held steady as the 3-1 favorite, Prix le Marois (G1) winner Inspiral jumped from 7-1 to 6-1 to become the sole second choice to win the Mile. Two new entries are Fourstardave Handicap (G1) victor Casa Creed and Arlington Million (G1) winner Santin, each at 14-1. Spendarella remains the shortest-priced U.S. horse for the race, at 10-1.

Filly & Mare Turf. The common denominator among the top choices for this race did not change. It merely deepened. Inspiral and Nashwa maintained their positions as joint favorites at 7-2. Even though she was a beaten favorite finishing fourth Saturday in the Matron (G1) on the soft turf at Leopardstown, Homeless Songs opened as the 6-1 third choice. Inspiral, Nashua and Homeless Songs all were sired by Frankel.

Turf Sprint. A three-race winning streak punctuated by Sunday’s victory in the Flying Five (G1) at the Curragh pushed Homeless Songs from 7-1 to a clear 2-1 favorite to win the 5 1/2-furlong race in Kentucky. Golden Pal, a two-time Breeders’ Cup winner who was triumphant last month in the Troy (G3) at Saratoga, drifted from a 2-1 favorite to a 9-4 second choice.
