Breeders' Cup continues pursuit of top-ranked Winx
It's expected Winx will finish her racing career Oct. 27 with what could be an unprecedented fourth straight win in the Group 1 Cox Plate. But that doesn't mean the Breeders' Cup has stopped its pursuit of luring the world's current top-ranked racehorse to America.
“Yes, we would be very extremely excited to have Winx compete in the World Championships at Churchill Downs," Dora Delgado, who works in nominations for the Breeders' Cup, told Australia's Daily Telegraph. "We believe the course would suit her quite well."
Winx has won over the last year at distances of seven furlongs to 1 1/4 miles, making her a potential contender in most every Breeders' Cup race offered for older horses. The 7-year-old daughter of Street Cry runs next in Saturday's Winx Stakes -- a Group 1 re-named to honor her -- going for her 26th straight victory.
Connections to Winx earlier this year declined a trip to run in England's famed Royal Ascot meet. That has done little to stop fans' wishes for her to face international competition.
That's not to say she hasn't beaten plenty at home. During the streak, Winx has defeated 56 individual Group 1 winners.
Will we see Winx's talent up close in the Breeders' Cup? Not likely, but there's still hope, as Delgado told the Daily Telegraph that "the ultimate goal of the Breeders' Cup is to provide a stage for the world’s best from around the globe to compete against one another and be named ‘World Champion.'"
Already the world record-holder for career Group 1 wins, Winx can better the consecutive wins mark posted by Black Caviar with victory Saturday. Notably, Black Caviar ventured outside of Australia amidst the peak of her career, running at Ascot.
