Breeders' Cup Mile: How to handicap the tough turf race
Check out these Breeders' Cup Mile 2017 tips from Horse Racing Nation's Mike Shutty, founder of the Super Screener.
Post time for the Distaff is 6:19 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Del Mar, with a look at the field and odds available here.
• The Euros vs. North American battle is about dead even with U.S.-based horses getting the upper hand as of late, winning 5 of the last 6 runnings.
• Keeneland's Shadwell Turf Mile has been a very productive prep for this race as all of the 4 most recent winners of the Breeders’ Cup Mile race used the Shadwell as their final prep.
• Long shot bombers hit the board regularly in this race, and the vast majority of those come from final preps taking place at Keeneland, Woodbine or Del Mar.
• The post position draw will be of little consequence going the mile distance on the turf at Del Mar as the combatants have the entire stretch run to sort things out before getting to the first turn. Of course, the preference would be to have a horse that avoids a far outside draw.
• In this race, the pace usually comes up pretty quick, and winners typically possess a super sharp turn of foot, so look for a horse that can drive a lot of late close as your top win contender.
