Breeders’ Cup: Futures odds are updated in 12 divisions

Whether it is on merit or on recency, Knicks Go looks like he will carry the favorite’s role on a flight to California this month for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

His four-length victory against an overmatched field Saturday in the Lukas Classic (G3) at Churchill Downs led the Costa Rica betting site Bovada to cut his odds from 3-1 to 5-2 to win the $6 million race Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

Essential Quality, who is training up to the Breeders’ Cup from his Aug. 28 win in the Travers (G1), remained firm at 4-1 on Monday morning, giving trainer Brad Cox the top two betting choices for the Classic.

Here are Bovada’s updated Breeders’ Cup futures odds for 12 of the 14 races scheduled to be run Nov. 5 and 6 (odds from last Monday are in parentheses):

Classic

Art Collector opened at 8-1 after his triumph Saturday in the Woodward (G1) at Belmont Park. Regardless of the status of his Kentucky Derby trophy, Medina Spirit was cut from 16-1 to 8-1 after his victory for trainer Bob Baffert in the Awesome Again (G1) on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Turf

A 71-1 long shot beat Tarnawa on Sunday in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1), but she still finished a game second on very soft going. Now she is a clear favorite to repeat her 2020 victory in the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Turf. Mishriff shortened from 4-1 to 7-2, but his presence at Del Mar might depend on how he does at Ascot on Oct. 16 in the British Champion Stakes (G1).

Distaff

Betting for the $2 million Distaff was temporarily suspended because of Sunday’s Zenyatta Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita, where Private Mission won her way into the Nov. 6 race. Still the 7-4 favorite, Letruska has her final prep Sunday in the Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.

Mile

That 4-0 record in 2021 is not going away, so Palace Pier remains the plus-185 favorite for the $2 million Mile. His coming to America may hinge on how he comes out of the British Champion Stakes (G1). Mo Forza moved from 9-1 to 6-1 with his fourth consecutive victory, a half-length win for trainer Peter Miller in the City of Hope (G2) on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Sprint

On a three-race winning streak, Jackie’s Warrior appears to be the focus of a bull market for the $2 million Sprint. He was cut from 7-4 to 5-4. Three-time Grade 1 winner Dr. Schivel made the bigger move. His 3 1/4-length triumph Saturday in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2) cut his odds from 10-1 to 4-1.

Filly & Mare Turf

There was only one change since last week for the $2 million Filly & Mare Turf. Last year’s winner Audarya went from 6-1 to 7-1 after she finished fourth Sunday in the Prix de l’Opéra (G1) in France. She was third in the same race last year before her Breeders’ Cup victory at Keeneland, but Audarya has not won in her four races since.

Dirt Mile

With so many uncertainties about the field for the $2 million Dirt Mile, there were no changes in the odds. Life Is Good held firm as the favorite a week after his Kelso Handicap (G2) triumph at Belmont Park.

Turf Sprint

On the bench since his seventh-place finish in the Nunthorpe (G1) at York, England, in August, Golden Pal still shortened in the Turf Sprint market. Trainer Wesley Ward brings him back Saturday in the Woodford (G2) at Keeneland. Lieutenant Dan made the biggest move since last week. He was cut from 25-1 to 10-1 after his half-length score in the Eddie D (G2) at Santa Anita ran his winning streak to three.

Filly & Mare Sprint

Even though there were no “win and you’re in” qualifiers last week for this $1 million race, the futures market was temporarily suspended. Last year’s winner Gamine remained the odds-on favorite before wagering was closed.

  4-5   (4-5) Gamine

Juvenile

A 3 1/4-length triumph Friday in the American Pharoah (G1) at Santa Anita thrust Corniche into the favorite’s role for the $2 million Juvenile. Jack Christopher opened as a joint third choice on the strength of his win Saturday in the Champagne (G1) at Belmont Park.

Juvenile Fillies

The market for this $2 million race was suspended before Sunday’s running of the Frizette Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park, where Echo Zulu won by 7 1/4 lengths. It stood to reason that with a 3-for-3 record for trainer Steve Asmussen, her odds will shorten significantly when betting is reopened.

  7-2   (7-2) Echo Zulu

  9-2   (9-2) Grace Adler

  6-1   (6-1) Hidden Connection

10-1 (10-1) Averly Jane

16-1 (16-1) Tarabi

Juvenile Turf Sprint

Perfect Power is already a Royal Ascot winner with two Group 1 victories since. The Ardad colt trained by Richard Fahey for Sheikh Rashid opened as the favorite to win the $1 million Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2). Twilight Gleaming, a National Defense filly trained by Ward, is the shortest-priced American horse thanks to her stakes win this summer in France.
