Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint 2020: Preview & Odds
The connections of multiple Grade 1 winners Gamine and Serengeti Empress have come to the same conclusion at different points in their careers: Both runners have the ability to run two turns, but they are even better around one turn and thus will target the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
Serengeti Empress won last year's Kentucky Oaks routing and Gamine was a close third in this year's Oaks. Though Gamine did not disgrace herself, the Oaks paled in comparison to her consecutive monster efforts around one turn in the Acorn and Test. Serengeti Empress has won multiple graded stakes routing, but has never been able to show the same consistency around two turns as she has sprinting.
As good as Serengeti Empress is, everyone will be running for second if Gamine repeats her Acorn and Test performances, where she received Beyer Speed Figures of 110 and 108, respectively. The highest Beyer Speed Figure in the history of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint was Groupie Doll's 108 in 2012.
If Gamine shows up with a repeat of her best, then her early 5-2 odds may seem like a gift. But, as usual, there is a catch. Gamine's best asset is speed. The same can be said for Serengeti Empress, Frank's Rockette, Mundaye Call, Break Even and Four Graces, among others. The pace in this race could be extremely hot, which could spell trouble for Gamine, especially if she draws inside.
Bell's the One at 11-1 and Sconsin at 12-1 are two horses that would benefit from a hot pace and could offer nice value.
While the best of the division are finished with their prep races, some high-quality fillies and mares will be running this weekend in their final Breeders' Cup preps. Frank's Rockette and Sneaking Out have a chance to stake their claim as the third choice in this race with strong performances in the Gallant Bloom and TCA, respectively.
Chad Brown's multiple G1 winner Guarana, who would be the second or third choice if she ran, is considered highly questionable for this race.
