Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint 2020: Odds & Preview

All eyes will rightfully be on Gamine and Serengeti Empress when they duke it out in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, but Frank's Rockette showed on Saturday that there is more depth to this division than just the two favorites.

Bill Mott's three-year-old filly dominated an overmatched field in the Gallant Bloom, earning a 95 Beyer Speed Figure in the process. She has never been worse than second in ten career starts and has the speed to keep the favorites in her sight.

She does appear to be at her best at six-furlongs however, which means her connections will have an interesting decision to make between the seven-furlong Filly and Mare Sprint and the six-furlong Sprint against males.

Most assume she will run against fillies and she has settled in as the third-choice at 8-1 in the early odds by bookmakers.

Gamine, who has been confirmed for the Filly and Mare Sprint rather than the Distaff, is the 5-2 early favorite. Serengeti Empress is sitting as high as 5-1 in some books.

Fourth-choice Bell's the One is no slouch herself. She defeated Serengeti Empress in the Derby City Distaff and will thrive as a closer at seven-furlongs in a race that figures to be loaded with pace.

Fifth-choice Sconsin would be the other main beneficiary of a contested early pace. She will look to continue her strong form in the Raven Run at Keeneland on October 17th. That is a tight turnaround to the Breeders' Cup, but she will not have to move tracks and Shamrock Rose was able to pull off the same feat in 2018.

Additional Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint updates

Michael McCarthy told HRN on Tuesday that Ce Ce will be headed to the Breeders' Cup, but he is unsure of the race she will run in. “We’ll keep an eye on both Breeders’ Cup races — Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint —make a decision as to where we’re going to run closer to that time," McCarthy said.

• John Shirreffs told HRN on Wednesday that Hard Not to Love is possible for the Distaff. “Her last race was really good,” Shirreffs said. “She could go to the seven-eighths race (Filly & Mare Sprint) or go to the Distaff.”

• Spiced Perfection, who has not been seen since running 6th in the Winning Colors on May 30th was not mentioned by trainer Mark Casse as one of his Breeders' Cup starters.

• Ian Wilkes told HRN on Wednesday that he is taking it "one race at a time" with Four Graces. She will try to turn the tables on Sconsin in the Raven Run and could head to the Breeders' Cup if she runs well.

• Bellafina has not recorded a work since the Derby City Distaff on 09/05.

• Mia Mischief has not recorded a work since 08/30.
