Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf 2020: Odds & Preview

The 2020 Filly & Mare Turf is shaping up to have one of the deepest and most talented fields of any race over Breeders' Cup weekend.

Trainer Chad Brown has his usual star-studded lineup led by Rushing Fall, Sistercharlie and My Sister Nat, but it is the possible European shippers that make this race so intriguing.

Though it is unlikely that they all will come, as many as six Europeans are considering the Filly & Mare Turf.

Recent Prix De l'Opera (G1) winner Tarnawa has won two consecutive Group 1's in France and is listed as the early 11-2 favorite for this wide-open race.

Trainer Dermot Weld, who has indicated that the Breeders' Cup is the goal for his star filly, has surprisingly never won a Breeders' Cup race in sixteen attempts, despite his tremendous success all over the world.

Aidan O'Brien's seven-time Group 1 winner Magical is  possible to make the journey to Keeneland. Magical ran a strong second to Enable in the 2018 Breeders' Cup Turf and recently defeated top males in the Irish Champion Stakes. She would likely be favored if she ran in this race, but her status is less certain than Tarnawa. If Magical does come for the Breeders' Cup, it may be to face males in the Turf.

It should come as no surprise that Brown has the strongest U.S. hand, but trainer Graham Motion is not far behind.

Motion is considering Grade 2 winner Mean Mary, who ran a good second behind Rushing Fall in the Diana; in addition to his fantastic three-year-old Sharing, who won last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and has gotten even better as a 3-year-old. Motion also could run Grade 2 winner Mrs Sippy.

If Arnaud Delacour's Magic Attitude wins the Filly & Mare Turf, both the U.S. and France will try to claim her as their own. The talented 3-year-old, who was a Group 3 winner in France this year, invaded America successfully while winning the Belmont Oaks.

Magic Attitude will have a chance to build on that Belmont Oaks success when she takes on Bill Mott's duo of Antoinette and Harvey's Lil Goil, along with Todd Pletcher's Sweet Melania, in Saturday's Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland.

If Tarnawa, Magical, Rushing Fall, Sharing and Magic Attitude all line up in the same starting gate, this has a chance to be one of the memorable editions of the Filly & Mare Turf.

Additional Breeders' Cup F&M Turf updates

• 2-time Group 1 winner Fancy Blue, who was under consideration for the Filly & Mare Turf was retired over the weekend.

• Cayenne Pepper has been catalogued for the 2020 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, which makes it likely the Group 2-winning European filly would run in the Breeders' Cup two days prior.

• 2018 Filly & Mare Turf winner Sistercharlie, who has yet to find her best form this year, has been rerouted from Saturday's Flower Bowl at Belmont to the E.P. Taylor at Woodbine on October 18th for her final prep.

• Civil Union, My Sister Nat, Beau Belle and Lovely Lucky, the 1-4 finishers in the Glens Falls are back for a rematch in Saturday's Flower Bowl. The top two finishers would likely progress to the Breeders' Cup.

Who's already going: Tarnawa, Rushing Fall, Mean Mary, Mucho Unusual, Cayenne Pepper, Bodhicitta

Who could be going: Magical, Alpine Star, Sharing, Fanny Logan, Peaceful, Toineete, Lady Prancealot, Mrs Sippy, Audarya, Jolie Olimpica
