Breeders' Cup F&M Sprint 2020: Latest Odds & Preview

There might not be a more polarizing horse in this year's Breeders' Cup than Gamine in the Filly and Mare Sprint.

She looked like racing's newest superstar in her romping wins in the Test (G1) and Acorn (G1), but was ordinary in her third-place Kentucky Oaks finish.

The daughter of Into Mischief has overwhelmed the 3-year-old division in one-turn races and will face a new challenge when taking on older foes.

Gamine might be singled on as many tickets as Monomoy Girl and Jackie's Warrior, but unlike those short-priced runners, there will be plenty of tickets that do not feature Gamine at all.

It is all about numbers for Gamine's fans and detractors. 108 and 110 are the outstanding Beyer Speed Figures she earned in her jaw-dropping wins in the Test and Acorn. The highest Beyer Speed Figure in the history of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint was Groupie Doll's 108 in 2012.

Zero is the number of horses she has passed thus far in her career. With her strong early speed, that does not matter most of the time, but it could be problematic in a Breeders' Cup field filled with speed, including likely second and third choices, Serengeti Empress and Frank's Rockette.

As fast as Gamine is, she has never set the :43.74 opening half that Serengeti Empress did in her Ballerina win. Serengeti Empress needs the lead to win. On Nov. 7, bettors will find out whether Gamine does as well.

Four Graces and Venetian Harbor, whose owners were not happy that jockey Joel Rosario did not engage Gamine early in the Test, would only add to the early pace if they are entered in the F&M Sprint. Both runners will have their final prep in the Raven Run at Keeneland on Saturday.

There is little question that Gamine is the most talented runner in the Filly & Mare Sprint, but the expected pace of the race makes this one of the more intriguing betting races of the Breeders' Cup.

Recent Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint updates

• Frank's Rockette was listed among the six horses that Bill Mott confirmed to HRN for the Breeders' Cup. She will start in either the F&M Sprint or the Sprint.

• Richard Baltas said that Venetian Harbor connections would eye the F&M Sprint if she bounces out of the Raven Run in good order.

• Mia Mischief has not recorded a work since Aug. 30 and has been removed from F&M Sprint consideration.

•  On Sept. 21, HRN reported that Chad Brown's three-time G1 winner Guarana would need to work soon to be considered for the Breeders' Cup. She still has not worked, with her last drill coming on July 25. She has been removed from consideration for the F&M Sprint.

Previous Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint updates

• Michael McCarthy told HRN that Ce Ce and Speech will be headed to the Breeders' Cup, but he is unsure of the races they will run in. “We’ll keep an eye on both Breeders’ Cup races — Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint —make a decision as to where we’re going to run closer to that time," McCarthy said.

• John Shirreffs told HRN on Wednesday that Hard Not to Love is possible for the Distaff. “Her last race was really good,” Shirreffs said. “She could go to the seven-eighths race (Filly & Mare Sprint) or go to the Distaff.”

• Spiced Perfection, who has not been seen since running sixth in the Winning Colors on May 30, was not mentioned by trainer Mark Casse as one of his Breeders' Cup starters.

• Ian Wilkes told HRN on Wednesday that he is taking it "one race at a time" with Four Graces. She could head to the Breeders' Cup if she runs well in the Raven Run.

• Bellafina has not recorded a work since the Derby City Distaff on Sept. 5, which puts her status in serious question.
