Breeders' Cup Distaff 2020: Latest Odds & Preview

The status of this year's leading three-year-old fillies is looming large over the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

There is no question that Monomoy Girl will be favored in the Distaff, but the top three finishers from the Kentucky Oaks could have had the potential to swing the competitive balance of the race significantly.

Bob Baffert has already announced that Gamine, the third-place finisher in the Oaks, will turn back in distance to run in the Filly and Mare Sprint.

Various outlets had reported that Kentucky Oaks winner Shedaresthedevil would bypass the Distaff following her third-place finish in the Spinster, but trainer Brad Cox told HRN that no decision has been made

It appears Swiss Skydiver's decision will determine if Monomoy Girl is odds-on or not.

Though Swiss Skydiver was only second in the Kentucky Oaks, she proceeded to put forth a powerhouse performance in her Preakness Stakes victory against the boys.

That victory has her connections considering a run in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

If Shedaresthedevil and Swiss Skydiver defect from the Distaff, then it could be the three-year-old filly that no one is talking about, Harvest Moon, that inherits the role as the second-choice.

Simon Callaghan's filly has won four races in a row, including the Zenyatta Stakes (G2) last out. Though she has never run a figure fast enough to contend with Monomoy Girl, she still has the upside that the remaining fillies and mares in this bunch lack.

Todd Pletcher's Valiance could also garner serious wagering support following her upset victory at Keeneland in the Spinster (G1). She has improved tremendously since switching to the dirt and has won five of her seven career races.

Additional Breeders' Cup Distaff updates

• John Sadler confirmed to HRN that Ollie's Candy is definite for the Distaff.

• Michael McCarthy told HRN that Ce Ce and Speech are pointing towards the Breeders' Cup, but he is uncertain if one or both would run in the F&M Sprint instead of the Distaff.

• Jack Sisterson confirmed to HRN that Vexatious would run in the Distaff

• Bill Mott's Horologist is expected to be supplemented to the Distaff.

• Bob Baffert's Fighting Mad will skip the race according to Brad Free of the Daily Racing Form who reported the news on the At the Races with Steve Byk radio program on Tuesday.
