Breeders’ Cup fair odds: Gold Cup tops Pacific Classic

There are still a few races left on the path to the Breeders' Cup Classic, but after this weekend's action I'd be surprised if my top six did not stay intact, barring defections.

None of the competitors in either the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup or the Pacific Classic (G1) impressed enough to usurp either Whitney Stakes (G1) winner White Abarrio or Travers Stakes (G1) winner Arcangelo for the top two spots, but JCGC winner Bright Future did jump all the way to third on my list after a nose victory over Proxy, who remains at 12-1.

As for the Pacific Classic, the top two were fine and the home-state advantage could be in play come November. But just on paper, I thought the JCGC was better.

The biggest drops, other than those out of the top 20 altogether, were the Florida Derby (G1) exacta of Forte and Mage. Either could jump up again with a strong prep, but the bottom line at this time is that their Travers performances weren't remotely good enough for this group. If there was wagering on this race now then, both would be certain underlays.
