• As has been the case over the past few years, this race is coming up huge with Bob Baffert’s
box office smash hits Arrogate and West Coast facing off with the uber-consistent Gun
Runner in what promises to be one of the best races of the year.
• Questions will abound about Arrogate taking to the Del Mar surface. but the bigger
question will be...is he mentally ready for this race? He seems to decide when we wants to
throw a record-breaking effort or a big-time dud. West Coast on the other hand is the
rising star and top candidate to take down the top 3-year-old honors -- and perhaps even
Horse of the Year with a win in the Classic.
• Baffert has won the last three editions of this race and is holding all the right cards right now to
make it four in a row.
• One would think closers have the advantage in this race, but if you look at the last five
editions, three have been won in wire-to-wire fashion and a presser finished second in those
races.
• At Del Mar, an off-the-pace type will have a better shot at the win over what you could
expect at Santa Anita or Keeneland, so we’ll need to shift our thinking a bit to
accommodate the move to this quirky seaside surface.
• Looking for long shot bombers in this race? Overall, it is a very formful race but when a
big price gets up in the bottom of Exotics it is almost always a horse that last ran at Belmont
Park.
