Breeders’ Cup 2025 pre-entries for all 14 races at Del Mar

Sovereignty, whose Grade 1 wins in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Travers wins have him on a fast track to year-end championships, leads the long list of horses who have been pre-entered for Breeders’ Cup 2025 next week at Del Mar.

A total of 207 pre-entries, which pencil in the fields for all 14 championship races, were announced in a FanDuel TV show Wednesday. Entries will be taken Monday at Del Mar.

Based on his position as the consensus top choice in futures markets, Sovereignty will be favored in the $7 million Classic, the Nov. 1 highlight of the two-day card that begins with five 2-year-old races Oct. 31.

The races are listed in the order they will be run with each runner’s best Horse Racing Nation speed figure in parentheses.

Friday

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, 5 furlongs, turf, 2-year-olds, 5:45 p.m. EDT

Aidan O’Brien, whose 20 wins tie him with the late D. Wayne Lukas for the most Breeders’ Cup training wins, surprised some race followers in Europe when he leaned Coolmore homebred filly True Love for this race rather than stretch her. The daughter of No Nay Never is 6: 3-3-0 in the Isles, most recently winning the Cheveley Park (G1) on Sept. 27 at Newmarket.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, 1 1/16 mile, 2-year-old fillies, 6:25 p.m. EDT

Bob Baffert is tied with Chad Brown for third with 19 wins in the Breeders’ Cup. Explora figures to be Baffert’s first big chance to add to that total. The $350,000 Blame filly owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman is 3: 2-1-0 including an Oct. 4 victory in the Oak Leaf (G2). If not for a one-length loss to Bottle of Rouge in the Del Mar Debutante (G1), she would have a flawless record.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, 1 mile, turf, 2-year-old fillies, 7:05 p.m. EDT

Since O’Brien stretched Precise from her second-place debut at six furlongs, she has done no wrong. Coolmore’s daughter of Starspangledbanner has won her last four races, including the seven-furlong Moyglare Stud (G1) and the Fillies’ Mile (G1) last month at Newmarket.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, 1 1/16 miles, 2-year-olds, 7:45 p.m. EDT

If there is a buzz horse for Friday, it has to be Ted Noffey. He carries the spoonerized name of Ned Toffey, who runs breeder-owner Spendthrift Farm. By star stallion Into Mischief, the Todd Pletcher-trained colt is 3-for-3 with wins at Saratoga in his debut and the Hopeful (G1) and then at Keeneland on Oct. 4 going 1 1/16 miles in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1).

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, 1 mile, turf, 2-year-olds, 8:25 p.m. EDT

Gstaad, who also represents O’Brien, does not bring in as gaudy a record as his fellow Friday favorites from the Coolmore stable. In spite of three straight second-place finishes, Europe bettors seem to think the Starspangledbanner colt who races forward may have the chops to stretch to a mile. Gstaad was second Oct. 11 in the seven-furlong Dewhurst (G1).

Saturday

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, seven furlongs, fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, 3 p.m. EDT

For Kopion and Sweet Azteca, this is a rematch of the July 5 Great Lady M (G2) at Los Alamitos. That was where Sweet Azteca got the best of Kopion after both took wide trips going the 6 1/2 furlongs. That snapped Kopion’s three-race winning streak dating to Dec. 26. Kopion will cut back after finishing second in the 1 1/16-miles Clement L. Hirsch (G1). Sweet Azteca scored again last out in the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) on Aug. 24.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, five furlongs, turf, 3-year-olds and up, 3:41 p.m. EDT

Ag Bullet comes in for trainer Richard Baltas off back-to-back wins in the Jaipur (G1) at Saratoga and the Ladies Turf Sprint (G2) at Kentucky Downs. Motorious has won three in a row in the Joe Hernández (G2), Daytona (G3) and Green Flash Handicap (G1) for Phil D’Amato. Arizona Blaze hopes to crash the California party off his win in the Flying Five (G1) in Ireland.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint, six furlongs, 3-year-olds and up, 4:21 p.m. EDT

Four-year-old Bentornato finished second to eventual champion Straight No Chaser last year in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Coming back from 10 months on the bench, he won the Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sept. 13 for trainer José D’Angelo. Straight No Chaser is back for trainer Dan Blacker to try and regain his form and repeat. Baffert counters with 4-year-old Imagination, who won Sept. 28 in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2) off his own eight-month break.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff, 1 1/8 miles, fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, 5:01 p.m. EDT

Seismic Beauty remains standing after others in her division have slipped in recent races. Baffert’s 4-year-old Uncle Mo filly has won her last three starts including the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) over 1 1/16 miles of the Del Mar main track. Nitrogen comes off a second in the Spinster (G1) and Dorth Vader a second in the Personal Ensign (G1).

Breeders’ Cup Turf, 1 1/2 miles, turf, 3-year-olds and up, 5:41 p.m. EDT

Rebels Romance, who won in 2022 and 2024, tries to become a three-time Breeders’ Cup Turf winner for 11-time-winning trainer Charlie Appleby, but he will have to fend off Minnie Hauk. She went up against the boys on the rain-softened turf in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) and damn near won the thing, losing to Daryz by just a head. The 3-year-old Frankel filly who seems like the latest big thing from Coolmore and O’Brien is no overnight sensation. She has not lost to any other females in her last six starts which include three Group 1 wins.

Breeders’ Cup Classic, 1 1/4 miles, 3-year-olds and up, 6:25 p.m. EDT

Sovereignty vs. Preakness winner Journalism vs. Pennsylvania Derby (G1) winner Baeza may be old hat. So how about throwing in mercurial Eclipse Award winners Sierra Leone and Fierceness from the ranks of older horses? Forever Young, who finished third last year in the Kentucky Derby and this race, tries to take the trophy back home to Japan.

Breeders’ Cup Mile, one mile, turf, 3-year-olds and up, 7:05 p.m. EDT

Appleby’s list of Breeders’ Cup victors includes two-time winners Modern Games and Rebel’s Romance. Four-year-old Notable Speech represents him and Godolphin on the heels of his Sept. 13 victory in the Woodbine Mile (G1). Appleby has won the Breeders’ Cup Mile three of the last four years with Space Blues in 20-21, Modern Games in 2022 and Master of The Seas in 2023.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, one mile, 3-year-olds and up, 7:45 p.m. EDT

Nysos is racing’s answer to the NFL’s Bosa brothers what with the list of ailments he has had to conquer. After 15 months off, Baffert brought him back for a dead-heat second to Mindframe in the Churchill Downs (G1). That is the only loss among the six races on a résumé that includes a July victory in the San Diego Handicap (G2). A bruised hoof took him out of the Pacific Classic (G1) in August, but the 4-year-old Nyquist colt has been on the work tab four of the last five weeks.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, 1 3/8 miles, turf, fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, 8:25 p.m. EDT

She Feels Pretty took trainer Cherie DeVaux to a third-place finish in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Now the Karakontie filly comes in off an August win in the E. P. Taylor (G1) at Woodbine. Godolphin and Appleby have Cinderella Dream, a three-time top-level winner who was second in last year’s Filly & Mare Turf. Trainer Andrew Balding’s 4-year-old filly See the Fire was second in the Prix de l’Opéra (G1) on the Arc undercard.
