Out of 160 horses that were entered for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup, four of them come back to defend their 2015 title in the same division. To make it to the Breeders’ Cup alone is a great accomplishment, and to win is a feat in itself, but to repeat in the Breeders’ Cup truly makes a horse a champion.
Mile: America’s beloved “Queen of the Turf” comes back to the Breeders’ Cup Mile off an impressive record of 7-6-1-0 for 2016. After winning four straight races in the beginning of the year, Tepin went on to run against Europe’s best in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes. Her first venture outside the country was a victorious one, and she returned to North America to beat males again in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile. Her lone defeat this year came in her last start, the Grade 1 First Lady, after Photo Call, who is also entered in the Mile, got away with a loose lead.
Turf: Found may have been pre-entered in both the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Breeders’ Cup Turf, but it was ultimately decided the star filly would remain on the familiar turf surface. From nine starts this year, Found holds an impressive record of 2-6-1. Her second win of the year was in the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, one of many starts against Europe’s top males. Her runner-up finishes are absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.
Turf Sprint: After heading overseas to Hong Kong and England, Mongolian Saturday came back to Keeneland, the sight of his 2015 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint win, to capture the Grade 3 Woodford Stakes. He failed to finish in the money during his four starts following the Breeders’ Cup, but heads to Santa Anita with hopes of defending his title.
Filly & Mare Sprint: Wavell Avenue earned her first stakes victory in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, but since then she has only managed to win the Shine Again Stakes in 2016, a race for fillies and mares who had not won a graded stake during the year. She returns to the Filly & Mare Sprint with this year’s record at 6-1-1-2.
