Smith Extends Lead in Breeders’ Cup Victories

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, 48, extended his lead for Breeders’ Cup victories with three wins to bring his total to 20. He had two winners Friday (London Bridge in the Marathon and Outstrip in the Juvenile Turf) and added another, Mizdirection (in the Turf Sprint) on Saturday. Smith broke out of a tie with retired Fall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey at 15 with two tallies here in 2012 (Mizdirection in Turf Sprint and Royal Delta in Ladies’ Classic).

Hall of Fame rider Gary Stevens, 50, also rode mounts that finished first in three Breeders’ Cup races over the weekend, but only made two trips to the winners’ circle with Beholder in the Distaff Friday and Mucho Macho Man in the Classic to bring his career total to 10. Stevens could have had a third but his mount, She’s a Tiger in the Juvenile Fillies Saturday, was disqualified and placed second by the stewards for interference in the stretch.

Stevens joined Smith as the only rider to win the Classic and the Distaff in the same year.  Smith did it in 1997 at Hollywood Park with Ajina in the Distaff and Skip Away in the Classic.

Two jockeys won their first Breeders’ Cup races with European champion Richard Hughes guiding Chriselliam to score in the Juvenile Fillies Turf  Friday, and Martin Garcia atop two winners for trainer Bob Baffert with New Year’s Day in the Juvenile and Secret Circle in the Sprint Saturday.

Five Trainers Get First Breeders’ Cup Wins

Five winners of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races over the weekend were greeted by trainers winning their first Championship test, four of them with their first starter. Trainer Kathy Ritvo came away with the richest prize after Mucho Macho Man’s thrilling nose victory in the Classic after the son of Macho Uno had finished second to Fort Larned in  the race last year here as Ritvo’s first Breeders’ Cup starter.

Winning with their first starters were Jo Hughes (London Bridge – Marathon), Charles Appleby (Outstrip – Juvenile Turf), Charles Hills (Chriselliam – Juvenile Fillies Turf) and Jeremiah Englehart (Ria Antonio – Juvenile Fillies on DQ).

The leader board for victories among trainers underwent only minor changes as Bob Baffert’s two victories brought his total to 10, moving him into second behind only D. Wayne Lukas with 19 after falling a nose short of making it 20 with Will Take Charge in the Classic. Bill Mott and Shug McGaughey remain tied for third at nine each. Richard Mandella and Aidan O’Brien each won a race to rank in a tie for fifth at eight apiece.

Breeders’ Cup Repeat Winners

Four winners of Breeders’ Cup races here in 2012 and one 2011 victor were back in the enclosure Friday or Saturday, two of them in different races and three winning the same race. Beholder got it started Friday with her stunning score in the Distaff after capturing the Juvenile Fillies last year.

Saturday Groupie Doll rallied for a repeat in the Filly & Mare Turf, followed by Mizdirection with another score over male rivals in the Turf Sprint. Secret Circle took the Sprint two years after winning the short-lived Juvenile Sprint in 2011 at Churchill Downs and Wise Dan put in an emphatic bid for another Horse of the Year title with his dramatic repeat victory in the Mile.

Breeders’ Cup Winners from Coast-to-Coast and World Wide

Horses based in England won four Breeders’ Cup races over the two days (London Bridge – Marathon; Outstrip – Juvenile Turf; Chriselliam – Juvenile Fillies Turf; and Dank – Filly & Mare Turf); Ireland was represented by Magician, winner of the Turf.  Among the Americans, California had five winners (Goldencents – Dirt Mile; Beholder – Distaff; Mizdirection – Geico Turf Sprint; New Year’s Day – Juvenile; and Secret Circle – Xpressbet Sprint), Kentucky had two (Groupie Doll – Filly & Mare Sprint; and Wise Dan – Mile), New York (Ria Antonia – Juvenile Fillies) and Classic winner Mucho Macho Man divided his time training in Florida, Maryland and California.

More Breeders’ Cup World Championships Odds and Ends

Five post-time favorites won Breeders’ Cup races this year. The winning favorites were Dank (Filly & Mare Turf); Groupie Doll (Filly & Mare Sprint); Mizdirection (Geico Turf Sprint); Secret Circle (Xpressbet Sprint); and Wise Dan (Mile).

The highest priced winner this year was Ria Antonia (32-1) in the Juvenile Fillies.
