Bonita goes last to first in Wasted Tears
Mario Silva’s Bonita ($11) surged from last to notch a second straight stakes victory, capturing Saturday’s $75,000 Wasted Tears by 1 ½ lengths under Edgard Zayas.
The Wasted Tears, a 1 1/16-mile stakes on turf, anchored the undercard on Saturday’s FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes program that has highlighted by the $200,000 Susan’s Girl and the $200,000 Affirmed.
Coming off a last-to-first triumph in the Panama City at Gulfstream Aug. 13, Bonita followed her winning formula again in the Wasted Tears. After trailing the seven horse field along the backstretch as Josdesanimaux and Mizz Money contested the pace, the 4-year-old daughter of Bluegrass Cat swiftly advanced along the inside into the turn for the homestretch before being swung to the outside for the drive to the wire. The Florida-bred filly collared Mizz Money nearing the wire and drew off to victory.
“She’s just got one way of running. You don’t mess with her a lot. She’s an ornery filly. She’s tough to deal with,” Stewart. “[Zayas] really rides her well. He’s got confidence in her.”
Bonita ran 1 1/16 miles on a firm turf course in 1:43.24 to score her fifth win in 16 starts.
“Age has helped her. She’s put on some weight. She’s probably 200 pounds heavier than she was last year. She’s really matured,” trainer Chad Stewart said. “She’s getting to be a stronger filly.”
Mizz Money, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, finished second, a length ahead of Temple Fur and jockey Darryl Holland.
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved at Gulfstream Park Saturday, producing a carryover jackpot of $84,944.63 for Sunday
Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $14,872.86.
The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket sold, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for nine programs since the jackpot was hit for $259,573 Aug. 19.
