Bold Warrior Likely for Curlin Stakes
Two days after losing his rider during a workout, Irving M. Cowan's Bold Warrior turned in a 1:27.86 seven-furlong breeze at Saratoga on Sunday as he trains for a possible start in this Friday's $75,000 Curlin.
Bold Warrior, who has a maiden victory and an optional claiming score to his credit, is nominated to Saturday's Grade 2 Jim Dandy, but is more likely to be entered in the Curlin, said Fernando Abreu, assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens.
The sophomore colt was scheduled to breeze seven furlongs on Friday before jockey Jose Lezcano fell off after a stirrup slipped. The son of Bernardini was credited with a 36.50 three-furlong breeze for his abbreviated adventure.
"The work he had today, he was supposed to have it two days ago," said Abreu. "Around the turn, one of the irons slipped out and the rider fell down. The horse stopped on his own and the outrider caught him."
Abreu said Bold Warrior escaped Friday's incident unscathed and was doing well following Sunday's seven-furlong workout.
"He was good today, and he came back well," said Abreu.
