Bobby's Wicked One rides the rail to win Keeneland's Commonwealth
At long odds of 13-1, Bobby's Wicked One came out on top of Warrior's Club and Limousine Liberal to win Saturday's Grade, 3 $250,000 Commonwealth Stakes at Keeneland.
The son of Speightstown, trained by Al Stall for Autumn Hill Farms Racing Stables, rode the rail for the second leg of the seven-furlong journey, using one last burst of speed to hold off the charging Warrior's Club, clipping the wire at 1:22.80.
"Whatever the reason, he’s so confident on the rail. It’s amazing," said trainer Al Stall Jr.
The Commonwealth marks the first graded stakes victory for the product of Autumn Hill Farms Racing Stables, Inc., who came up fifth in the Malibu Stakes (G1) in December.
Bobby's Wicked One is now 3-for-3 to start his 4-year-old campaign.
“We sent him out for the Malibu (G1) and he ran his eyeballs out. He couldn’t have run any better. Hooked McKinzie, was in a photo for second (and finished fifth)," continued the trainer. "Came back to New Orleans, gave him a little breather, and I’ve never had a horse get in such good form as he’s been in his last two races. He won those two races down there in 1:09 and change and he was literally jogging. So we came to this race with a ton of confidence.”
“Al gives me all the confidence," said jockey Miguel Mena of the winning mount. "I send my horse, come over and I was in there with the third horse and we backed it up. We were comfortable, going nice. I’m on a very nice horse.”
