Peter Miller’s Bobby Abu Dhabi and Doug O’Neill’s Aristocratic head a field of five in Sunday’s $75,000 San Pedro Stakes for three year olds, to be run at six furlongs.
An impressive first condition allowance winner at Santa Anita on March 19, Bobby Abu Dhabi would appear to rate top billing over Aristocratic, who comes off a disappointing effort in an ungraded stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 4.
BOBBY ABU DHABI: A first-out maiden winner going 6 ½ furlongs on Nov. 19, he showed speed and was then distanced by superstar Mastery in his second start, the Grade I Los Alamitos Futurity going 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 10. He cut back in distance to 6 ½ furlongs here on March 19 and responded with a visually impressive 1 ¼ length allowance win as he was geared down at the wire. Owned by Rockingham Ranch, he’ll be ridden for the fourth consecutive time by Norberto Arroyo, Jr.
ARISTOCRATIC: Quick from the gate, he was a prompt 1 ¼ length allowance winner going 5 ½ furlongs on a wet fast track two starts back on Feb. 11 at odds of 3-5. Dispatched at 5-2, he showed brief speed when beaten 16 ¼ lengths in his most recent effort, a six furlong stakes at Oaklawn Park on March 4. Owned by Kaleem Shah, Aristocratic will be making his fifth career start in the San Pedro and will be reunited with Rafael Bejarano, who was up for his allowance win on Feb. 11.
