The
list of fillies that have either won or placed in the Churchill Downs
Debutante in the last twenty years reads like a who’s who of racing.
Champions Hollywood Wildcat, Golden Attraction, Silverbulletday, and Chilukki won
the Debutante while Champions Countess Diana and Rachel Alexandra were
runners-up in the contest. Other notable Debutante heroines who continued on to
top careers include Golden Attraction, Cashier’s Dream and Awesome Humor. The last two Debutante graduates Just Louise
and Flashy Lassie were precocious sprinters who haven’t progressed with the
rest of their crop. Let’s take a look at this year’s Debutante winner Blueeyesintherein’s
pedigree for clues to her future.
Breaking
from the three post, BLUEEYESINTHEREIN
angled towards the rail in the early stages to sit fourth to behind the three
pace setters. Rounding the far turn, her jockey Leandro Goncalves
smartly angled her off of the rail four wide. At the top of the stretch, it
appeared to be anyone’s race with six fillies lined up across the track, but Blueeyesintherein
slowly pulled away from the pack. Drifting slightly in the stretch, the bay
filly maintained her 2 ½ length lead to win the six furlong debutante in
1:11.71, rewarding her trainer Garry Simms with
back-to-back victories in the Churchill Debutante.
Magna
Graduate’s first crop of 56 foals are two year olds. He has two winners from
four starters and Blueeyesintherein is his first stakes winner. His other maiden winner, Truthandknowledge
was ninth behind Blueeyesintherein in the Debutante. The majority of Magna
Graduate’s offspring will be mid to late season runners who should be best up
to 1 1/8 miles, although he may get a couple of winners going longer. Most will be best over dirt, but Magna
Graduate may pass the turf attributes of his ancestors Danzig and European
Champion Alleged on to some offspring, particularly if they have other turf influences
through their distaff lines.
The strong sprinter/miler sire Mr. Greeley is Blueeyesintherein’s
damsire. Mr. Greeley won two Grade 3 sprints and was
second in the 1995 Breeders' Cup Sprint. As a stallion, he sired 2006 European
Champion Filly Finsceal Beo, Mother Goose heroine Nonsuch Bay and the sires El
Corredor and Whywhywhy. Mr. Greeley has been a fairly consistent broodmare
sire, and has been in the top 50-60 on the leading broodmare sire lists for the
last five years. His daughters’ offspring include multiple Grade 1 winner Zazu
and Kentucky Derby runner-up Closing Argument.
Blueeyesintherein
(Magna Graduate
- Tartufi, by Mr. Greeley) was a $10,000 Keeneland September sales yearling. Her first crop sire Magna Graduate was a
hardy, consistent Grade 2 and Grade 3 class performer on the track. Although he
improved with racing, the son of Honor Grades won or placed in four of his five
starts as a juvenile, including a runner-up placing in the Kentucky Cup
Juvenile Stakes (G-3). Magna Graduate recorded wins in the Clark (G-2),
Discovery (G-3) and Pegasus (G-3) and he hit the board in the Stephen Foster
Handicap (G-1) and Dubai World Cup (G-1). Magna Graduate retired with a 35-10-6-6
($2,582,816) record.
Tartufi,
Blueeyesintherein’s dam, needed four starts to win her maiden and did so on
disqualification of the winner, but was otherwise unplaced in six races. Her
first foal, Set the Sail (by Mizzen Mast) won his maiden this May going a mile
over the turf. It was his first time hitting the board in three starts. Blueeyesintherein’s distaff immediate female
family is filled with modest turf runners.
Her second and third dams placed over the lawn in Europe, but otherwise,
there is no notable blacktype. Blueeyesintherein’s fourth dam Monade was
twice Champion in France. She is a blue hen, as her descendants include the
Champion mare Queena, Grade 1 winner Pressing Date, etc.
Blueeyesintherein
has miler-type conformation. She’s an average sized filly with a moderately
angled shoulder and powerful hindquarters. She’s a nice mover on the track, as
she has a fluid gait with average leg extension. Blueeyesintherein showed a professional
demeanor sitting behind horses. She exchanged minor bumping during the race
which didn’t faze her and passed horses willingly. She did drift slightly
through the stretch indicating that she was tiring slightly. Blueeyesintherein
has middle distance stamina mixed with miler type speed throughout her pedigree.
She’ll likely be best up to 1 1/16 miles and may be versatile later in her
career to race over the lawn or Polytrack.
