Following Daredevil’s impressive victory in yesterday’s Champagne Stakes at Belmont, trainer Todd Pletcher may have another bonified juvenile star in his barn with Glencrest Farm LLC and JSM Equine’s Blofeld.
Lightly raced thus far, the son of Quality Road has now followed a solid maiden special weight victory at Saratoga in August with a graded stakes score in the Grade 2, $200,000 Futurity at Belmont on Sunday. Now undefeated in two starts, the grey colt adds his first stakes to his young resume for an earnings total of nearly $170,000.
Cinco Charlie, ridden by Ricardo Santana, Jr., broke sharply on the inside to command the early lead with a pace :23.10 and :46.20. Hebbronville kept close to the outside of the leader. Favored at 6-5, Blofeld and jockey John Velazquez maintained a ground-saving trip on the inside rail, keeping within two lengths of the frontrunners. Far Right and Mr. Amos trailed early.
Cinco Charlie maintained his lead turning through the turn and dug in to hold off an outside challenge from Hebbronville. Blofeld found room on the inside to surge through to prevail by 3/4 of a length.
Hebbronville wore down Cinco Charlie to finish second by a length. Far Right and Mr. Amos completed the order of finish.
The running time for six furlongs was 1:09.49.
The winner was bred in Kentucky by Keats Grove Farm and purchased as a 2-year-old in training for $225,000 at Fasig-Tipton earlier this year.
