Bim Bam Eyes Palm Beach

J D Farm’s 3-year-old homebred colt Bim Bam is a neck short of being perfect in his three turf stakes starts for trainer David Brownlee, and is on course to make his next appearance as one of the favorites in the $150,000 Palm Beach Stakes (G3) going 1 1/8 miles over the Gulfstream Park course on Sat., Mar. 6.

“He couldn’t be doing any better,” said Brownlee from his Calder Race Course headquarters Friday morning. “He worked good last Saturday (‘bullet’ five furlongs in 1:02) and will work again tomorrow with Eibar (Coa). We don’t ask him to work fast. He just does it on his own.

“He’s versatile. He’s run on turf the last three times because the timing of the races worked so well more than anything else. He excels on turf, but at a certain point we will try him again on dirt and synthetic (surfaces),” said Brownlee.

A bay colt by J D Farm-owned stallion Deputy Wild Cat, Bim Bam won a hard-fought nose decision over favorite Interactif last out in the $125,000 Hallandale Beach Stakes over the course on Feb. 7 after a neck loss when second in the Dania Beach here on Jan. 16.

Bim Bam made his first six starts on the main track at Calder, finishing third in all three divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes series behind Jackson Bend, punctuated with a victory in the Foolish Pleasure Stakes in late September. He captured the $100,000 Arthur Appleton Juvenile Turf on Nov. 14 in his first start on grass and final start before the two Gulfstream stakes.
