Big Fields Set for Monmouth Opener

Monmouth Park opens this Saturday, May 12, with a 12-race program attracting a total of 117 entries.

Topping Saturday’s card is the $75,000 Decathlon Stakes for 3-year-olds and upward, which attracted nine entrants – all previous stakes winners.

The six-furlong Decathlon is the first of this year’s stakes events, which includes 17 graded races.  Centerpiece of Monmouth’s summer as always will be the $1 million Haskell Invitational, which has its 45th running on Sunday, July 29.  Gates will open at 11:30 a.m. and first post is set for 12:50 p.m. every day except Haskell Day, when the gates open at 10 a.m. and first post will be 12 noon, and twilight racing on the last four Thursdays in August – first post will be 4 p.m.

Among those entered in Saturday’s Decathlon Stakes is the 2010 winner, Congressional Page, who will break from post three for trainer Michael Trombetta.  Local runners will book-end the field as Wildcat Brief, for conditioner Ben Perkins Jr., has drawn the fence, while Zero Rate Policy, trained by Terri Pompay, will come from post nine.  The Decathlon will go as race 10 on the card with an estimated post time of 5:18 p.m.
