Two of the most prestigious races leading up to the Kentucky Derby are being offered in a special all-graded stakes Pick 4 this Saturday by The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) and Keeneland.
The Grade 1, $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack and the Grade 1, $1 million Toyota Blue Grass at Keeneland, both for 3-year-olds going 1 1/8 miles, along with the Grade 3, $300,000 Bay Shore for sophomore sprinters at the Big A and Grade 1, $300,000 Madison for filly and mare sprinters at Keeneland, will comprise the first Big Apple/Bluegrass Pick 4.
The Wood Memorial and the Toyota Blue Grass serve as the final major races in New York and Kentucky for the May 7 Derby, featuring major contenders for the "Run for the Roses." Both the Wood and the Toyota Blue Grass are worth 100 points to the winner under the Derby's qualifying system and virtually guarantee a slot in the starting gate at Churchill Downs.
The Wood, which has produced 20 Derby champions, will be headed by undefeated Grade 3 Gotham winner Shagaf, with Flexibility, Matt King Coal, Outwork and Adventist among the other leading contenders. Headed by Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner Brody's Cause and Zulu, second in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park, a full field is lined up for the Toyota Blue Grass, which counts 23 Derby winners among its graduates.
Madison entrants are: Birdatthewire, Cavorting, Clothes Fall Off, Dancing House, Enchanting Lady, Fioretti, Sarah Sis, Sheer Drama, Spelling Again, Stopchargingmaria, Sunday Rules, Super Majesty, Thirteen Arrows, and Wavell Avenue.
Awesome Gent, Awesome Speed, Cocked and Loaded, King Kranz, Richie the Bull, Sallisaw and Unified are likely for the Bay Shore.
The Big Apple/Bluegrass Pick 4 begins with the Bay Shore (4:52 p.m. EDT), followed by the Madison (5:20 p.m. EDT), the Wood Memorial (5:30 p.m. EDT) and the Blue Grass (6 p.m. EDT). With a minimum wager of $0.50, the Big Apple/Bluegrass Pick 4 is available on all NYRA wagering platforms on-track, online at nyra.com and mobile at m/nyra.com or onsite at Keeneland or KeenelandSelect.com.
