Benzel sees future without lasix

For trainer Seth Benzel, racing free of Lasix is a worthy goal, one which can be reached using common sense as a guide.
Industry groups are studying the idea, prompted by a call earlier this year by the Association of Racing Commissioners International to bring the United States and Canada in line with most jurisdictions around the world.
Those jurisdictions prohibit medication on race day.
“When I say common sense, I mean these horses have been allowed by our jurisdiction to have the medication,” said Benzel. “So, as with any type of substance used in this manner, the horse is going to develop a certain dependency. Can they make their way out of this dependency? Definitely!”
