Beholder, Jimmy Creed on course for BC

Beholder and Jimmy Creed are on course for their Breeders’ Cup engagements. “They both worked an easy three-eighths the other day and they’ll get a serious work next week,” Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella said. “They came out in great shape.

“Beholder is intended most likely for the (Juvenile) Sprint (against males). I think she wants to sprint more than anything right now and that’s what we’re looking at. There’s a small chance of changing our mind and going for the Juvenile Fillies (at 1 1/16 miles), but right now it would be the Sprint.

“Jimmy Creed is doing well and aiming for the ($1.5 million XpressBet) Sprint (for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs). He ran a good race here in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (third to Coil and Capital Account on Oct. 6), but it looked like with a little luck he could have had a better position, so I’ve got to give him another try at it.”

Should he win the Sprint, Jimmy Creed would not be the first 3-year-old to do so. Far from it. Previous sophomores to win are the filly Very Subtle for Mel Stute in 1987; Sheikh Albadou (1991); Reraise for Craig Dollase (1998); Squirtle Squirt (2001); Cajun Beat (2003); and Silver Train (2005).
