Remington Park’s richest 2-year-old stakes race of the season, the $250,000 Springboard Mile, pulled 46 nominations. The possible starters from the list are currently stabled from the east coast to the west coast.
The Springboard also shapes up as the potential rubber match between Bayerd and Shotgun Kowboy in the three-race series of 2-year-old stakes races at Remington Park. Bayerd won the $75,000 Kip Deville Stakes in September with Shotgun Kowboy running third. Shotgun Kowboy then managed to spin the results by winning the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes in November with Bayerd finishing second.
Both Bayerd and Shotgun Kowboy are owned by Oklahomans. Clark Brewster of Tulsa campaigns the Kentucky-bred Bayerd while C.R. Trout of Edmond serves as the owner/trainer/breeder of Shotgun Kowboy, an Oklahoma-bred.
The tale of the tape has Shotgun Kowboy ahead in career wins with three, having also won the $86,000 Oklahoma Classics Juvenile in October here. Bayerd has two victories with his romping 11-1/2 lengths maiden triumph at Saratoga in upstate New York in August also on his resume.
Shotgun Kowboy leads in career earnings with $146,701 while Bayerd has accumulated $132,100.
Steve Asmussen, trainer of Bayerd, has also nominated the top winner and earner among the list of 46 in Cinco Charlie. A Kentucky-bred owned by William and Corinne Heiligbrodt of Houston, Cinco Charlie has won four career races with total earnings of $239,472.
Currently in training at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, Cinco Charlie has won the Grade 3, $100,000 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. in June, finished third in the Grade 3, $250,000 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga and then third in the Grade 3, $200,000 Futurity at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. in October. Recently, Cinco Charlie won the $100,000 James F. Lewis III Stakes at Laurel Park in Maryland in November.
Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has nominated a pair for the Springboard in Cyrus Alexander and Stand And Salute, both currently in training in California. Hollendorfer sent Tonito M. to Remington Park in September to win the Grade 3, Oklahoma Derby.
Remington Park is open daily at 10:30am for simulcast racing and casino gaming, featuring the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, the home of the $250,000 Springboard Mile on Sunday, Dec. 14.
