Barn Tour: What's next for Masqueparade, Stall's others?
Al Stall Jr. has had a solid year thus far in 2021, winning at a clip of more than 20 percent and earning more than $1.6 million. He has done so while missing his top horse of the last two years in Tom’s d’Etat, who was retired.
Stall gave updates on his top talent, including his stakes winner from Saturday in an HRN Barn Tour.
Masqueparade. Stall said the Upstart colt came out of his Ohio Derby (G3) victory on Saturday in good condition.
“Doesn’t look like he’s too worse for the wear,” Stall said. “He hasn’t gone back to the track yet but he appears to be pretty good to us.”
According to Stall, Masqueparade will next go in the Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga on July 31, with the rest of the year’s races undetermined.
“If you get lucky and are competitive in the Jim Dandy, then there’s the obvious, possibly the Travers,” Stall said. “We’re just chipping along.”
Sir Alfred James. The 5-year-old gelding by Munnings finished third in his last race, the Aristides at Churchill Downs on May 29. He will head to Ellis Park for his next start, the $75,000 Good Lord on July 17. “I’m hoping it will be a little lighter than the race he just ran in and maybe the horses that ran the Kelly’s Landing this weekend will skip it,” Stall said. “So hopefully it’s a semi-in between race, may be good for him.”
Dalika. Since finishing second in her most recent race, the Keertana Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs on May 22, the Pastorius mare has not appeared on the work tab. However, Stall said she has in fact been working at Skyline Training Center in Goshen, Ky., and will soon run in the July 17 $150,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial at Delaware Park.
In Good Spirits. Following a fourth-place finish in the Giant’s Causeway at Keeneland on April 10, Stall said the Ghostzapper filly will likely run in allowance company next time out. She won her last allowance race at Fair Grounds in January. “She had a bruised foot that’s cleared up,” Stall said. “Maybe get a race in her and hopefully get back into the 'black type' type races.”
Carribean Caper. The 3-year-old Speightstown filly is undefeated in two races after being purchased as a yearling for $250,000 at the Keeneland September sale in 2019. She broke her maiden going six furlongs at Fair Grounds in February. She moved into allowance company for her next race and won at seven furlongs at Keeneland. Stall said there is a chance she will try a stakes race, possibly the Victory Ride (G3) at Belmont Park on July 10. “The 'noms' looked kind of strong to me, so I’m not sure about that,” Stall said. “She’s about one more work and ready to run, so we’re on the hunt for a spot, but she’s doing well.”
Gillian Elizabeth. Stall pointed to the 2-year-old Astern filly as one of the top up-and-comers in his barn. She rallied down the stretch to finish second in her first race at Churchill Downs on June 17. “She’ll run on the grass at Saratoga,” Stall said.
