Barn Tour: See updates on O Besos, Foley's other top talent
Louisville, Ky.
Greg Foley has had one of the best years of his career so far in 2021. The Churchill Downs-based trainer already has won 35 races, just four removed from his career high of 39, set last year.
He also has earned $2,557,524 so far, blowing past his previous high of just over $2 million, set in 2004. Foley, who will start Sconsin in Saturday’s Dream Supreme at Churchill, updated Horse Racing Nation on some of his top talent.
After running second in the Matt Winn (G3), O Besos suffered a setback before a planned trip in the Indiana Derby (G3). The Orb colt, who finished fifth in this year’s Kentucky Derby, only recently returned to the track.
“Went a little quicker than he needed to (Tuesday morning) with 47 and change,” Foley said of the four-furlong breeze. “But did it easy, it looks really good.”
Foley said he did not have a spot picked out for the racing return of O Besos, who will go with the trainer to Fair Grounds for the winter.
After a seventh-place finish in the Fayette Stakes (G2) at Keeneland on Oct. 30, Major Fed will drop back to allowance company for his next race. He collected two victories in allowances this year, both at Churchill Downs.
“Going to run him back here at the end of the meet,” Foley said. “There’s a three-other-than.”
Winner of three stakes races this year, the Congrats colt will take time off after a disappointing fourth place in the Bet on Sunshine Saturday at Churchill Downs. In that race, Bango chased the pace before flattening out deep into the stretch.
“He had no excuses, we got beat a couple of lengths and he just didn’t really show up to run” Foley said. “He’s a very sound horse. He looks great. Went in that race – I thought we would win and I thought he was the best horse in the race.”
The Yes It’s True mare has two stakes wins this year, the Chicken Fried Stakes at Lone Star in June and the Kentucky Downs Preview Ladies Sprint at Ellis Park. In her last race, she finished sixth in the Franklin County (G3) at Keeneland.
According to Foley, she will next run in the Richie Scherer Memorial on Dec. 26 at Fair Grounds.
The 4-year-old Into Mischief filly won three races this year, breaking her maiden in March at Fair Grounds before winning at Churchill Downs and Ellis Park. Most recently she tried stakes company for the first time, finishing third in the Kentucky Downs Preview Ladies Sprint Stakes at Ellis Park on Aug. 8
That race will stand as her finale for 2021.
“Skinny Dip is on the farm getting a little break,” Foley said. “You’ll see her in the spring.”
Foley pointed to the 2-year-old Summer Front colt, who has finished third in both of his races this season, as another prospect from his barn who he is particularly excited about. The colt will be running again this year, this time going 1 1/16 miles.
“I like him,” Foley said. “I think he’ll run well when we run him.”
