Barn Tour: Glatt is off to a good start this winter at Santa Anita

His nine wins from 35 starts at the current Santa Anita meet put him in a second-place tie with Doug O’Neill, who has had 59 starts. Both trail Bob Baffert’s 14 wins from 52 starts.

Glatt has a colt, Spun Intended, who was getting his start on the Kentucky Derby trail in the Jan. 8 Sham (G3) after breaking his maiden by 6 1/4 lengths. But the son of Hard Spun was pulled up because of a condylar fracture, Glatt told Horse Racing Nation on Tuesday.

“Surgery went well,” he said. “He's doing terrific. Recovery has been well. And we haven't really thought past that at this time. Horses can come back and do come back to race from condylar fractures. I don't know whether he will or not. I think it'll just depend upon how his layoff time goes here and see how he heals.”

Glatt provided updates on other top horses in his stable, including Dr. Shivel’s comeback, for the latest in HRN’s Barn Tour series.

3-year-olds

Mi Hermano Ramon. The son of Creative Cause is 2-for-2, with both starts on the turf. “Very good colt,” Glatt said. He just ran (Friday). I think we're a little undecided with him at this time as to what race would be next for him.”

First Peace. This Funtastic colt has a record of 5: 1-2-1. After breaking his maiden on third try, he was third in the Cecil B. DeMille (G3) and second by a half-length last out in the Eddie Logan. “He's scheduled to start in the Baffle Stakes (Feb. 26 at Santa Anita). He's doing well. And that race is down the hill, and I think he might enjoy that trip.”

Single Track Mind. The Ireland-bred son of Mehmas had his first start in England before moving stateside. He’s now 0-for-5 but has finished in the money in his last two tarts. “Each race, I think, is visually better and better for him since he's gotten to the U.S. Just kind of looking for that breakthrough performance. He's improved kind of in every facet since the time he's gotten here. And so we're just kind of waiting. No. 1 goal is to get his maiden broke. But I don't think we've seen the best of him. So, hopefully that's coming up Saturday.”

Bajan Bashert. The Speightster filly has two seconds in two starts. She’s entered in a maiden special weight for California-bred fillies Friday at Santa Anita.

Older horses

Dr. Schivel. The 5-year-old son of Violence has a record of 10: 5-2-2, including three Grade 1 wins, but he hasn’t raced since finishing third in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) in March. “He's in training,” Glatt said. “He's due to have his first breeze here fairly soon, and we expect to have him back around in the spring. … He had some bone bruising that took a while to completely settle down.”

Spycatcher. The 4-year-old Noble Mission colt is 0-for-6, but in his last three starts, he’s lost by less than a length. “Spy Catcher's on a brief rest. He'd had a little bit of a hard campaign, and we just felt like it'd be best to give him a little breather. So he'll be back late spring or early summer.”

Howbeit. The 6-year-old son of Secret Circle had one win in five starts last year, holding off C Z Rocket by a nose in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2). Glatt said he’ll start next in the Palos Verdes (G3) on Sunday at Santa Anita.

Whatmakessammyrun. The 5-year-old gelding by We Miss Artie got his last win three starts ago in the Eddie D. (G2) and continues to train forward. “There's a race coming up in March, coming down the hillside course,” Glatt said.

Teddy’s Barino. The 5-year-old daughter of Grazen moved into graded-stakes company after four straight wins, finishing third in the Chillingworth. “She's coming off a bit of a layoff. Right now she is scheduled to run hopefully on Feb. 11” in an allowance race.
