'Baffling,' Sir Winston regrouping after poor showing in Suburban

Sometimes Sir Winston runs like a champion. At his best, he won the Belmont Stakes.

But sometimes he doesn’t. Sometimes he’s befuddling to everyone, including his trainer, Mark Casse.

One of those times came on Saturday, when the son of Awesome Again finished in sixth place in the Grade 2 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.

“Sir Winston’s done that to us a couple times,” Casse said. “I don’t know, he just never engaged. He was the most baffling of all the horses.”

Casse said that the problem isn’t physical for the colt, who said was in good shape heading into the race.

“I don’t know what to think of him,” Casse said. “He’s sound, he’s happy. Joel [Rosario] said he was moving well, he just had no interest in going after anybody.”

As for what’s next for Sir Winston, Casse said that he hopes a change of scenery, moving to Saratoga, will do him some good, and will be aiming for the Alydar on August 9.

Casse previously said that his goal for the colt in 2020 is to go to the Breeders’ Cup.
