Bob Baffert’s first-time starter, Justify, romped by 9 ½ lengths in Sunday’s second race at Santa Anita Park, living up to his $500,000 sales price as a Keeneland September yearling.

Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, the striking chestnut colt by Scat Daddy got seven furlongs in 1:21.86.
“He does not need blinkers!” exclaimed Baffert.
The colt is Triple Crown nominated.

“It’s not too late,” said Baffert.  “I’ve got a plan…We’re looking (for a graded stakes race).  He’s shown his brilliance in the morning.”
Head and head early, Justify asserted his superiority three furlongs from home and glided through fast splits of 21.80, 44.37 and 1:09.07. Owned by Winstar Farm, LLC, China Horse Club and SF Racing, LLC, he was off at 1-2 and paid $3.00 to win.
