Back from an injury: Gustavo Larrosa is in the irons

Gustavo Larrosa is happy to be back riding again after a riding mishap last December when a young horse he was on got fractious in the starting gate and pinned his arm between the gate and the horse. Gustavo, a native of the country of Uruguay, has over 7,300 rides since 2003, with 664 wins, 710 seconds, and 783 thirds and over $11.8 million in purse earnings.  
 
For Gustavo, 46, the dream was to always work with horses. Gustavo started riding at an early age. Once he turned 18, it was off to Argentina to ride horses in the Jockey School. Gustavo was known amongst his jockey peers as “Aquel que tiene un gran equilibrio” or “the one who has great balance”.  
 
In 2003, Gustavo moved his tack to the United States where he won his very first race in his new home. Gustavo has ridden at many of the country’s racetracks, but now calls Ranson, WV and Charles Town Races home. Gustavo’s dreams include being a leading rider at a prominent racetrack and winning as many stakes races as he can, but for now Gustavo is happy just to be back riding horses. Gustavo commented, “When asked what I like to do most? Horses…I always answer horses.” 
 
Since returning to riding in 2012, Gustavo has had 193 mounts with 18 wins, 18 seconds, and 25 thirds with over $383,000 in purse earnings. Gustavo has had the fans cheering for him and his return to the saddle. Since setting up the Gustavo Larrosa, Jockey Fan Page on Facebook in the middle of March of this year, Gustavo has acquired 166 fans/friends, many of whom have posted positive thoughts and comments for his return. 
 
Gustavo is married to his wife Analia. They have two children, Nicolas, age 13 and Sharon, age 5.  In addition to being a thoroughbred jockey, Gustavo helps Analia on the farm with the horses. He also enjoys bowling, shuffleboard and scrapbooking with his friends and family in his spare time. Be sure to say “Hola Gustavo!” the next time you are at the races. Who knows, he may just be riding another winner when you see him.
