Back Away Holds On at Meadowlands

Metro Thoroughbred LLC’s Back Away took the lead around the far turn and held off the flying finish of Cheyenne Nation to capture the $32,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at the Meadowlands by a nose.

With Victor Santiago in the irons, Back Away stepped the mile and 70 yards over firm turf in 1:42 3/5 and returned $8.80, $4.60 and $3.  Cheyenne Nation completed the $44 exacta and paid $3.40 and $2.80.  It was another 2 ¾ lengths back to Film Shot, who paid $2.80 to show.

Trained by Derek Ryan, Back Away is a 4-year-old gelding by Put It Back from the Pine Bluff mare Que Delicia.  He has won six of his 13 starts this year.

Live Thoroughbred racing continues at the Meadowlands on Monday, Oct. 14 – gates open 11:30 a.m., first post 12:50 p.m.  The 2013 all-turf Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet runs through Nov. 2.
