Kitten's Point – Augustin
Stable’s Kitten’s Point galloped 1 1/2m under exercise rider David Nava
Wednesday morning at Santa Anita.
The $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf hopeful
appears to have handled the cross-country trip like a pro.
“She seems to have taken everything in stride. She’s so
good. We’ve been really, really happy the way she’s come here and settled in,”
said Alice Clapham, assistant to trainer Graham Motion, who was en route to
Santa Anita from his Fair Hill (Md.) Training Center base.
“She’s a pretty easy-going filly, but you never know first
time on a plane. Sometimes they can get a little anxious. But she’s done
nothing but being good and eating up.”
Despite her taking her long trip in stride, the 2yo filly is
still a little “green,” according to Clapham.
“You can see in her eye that she’s telling you she’s doing
everything that she knows she should, but you can see that she’s looking around
and taking everything in. She’s learning all the time herself, but she’s doing
it in a very good, relaxed and honest way.”
Moonwalk/Sustained – The
Juvenile Fillies Turf holds a special place for trainer Dale Romans because
when Tapitsfly won the race in 2009 it was the first Breeders’ Cup victory of
his career.
When asked if his Jessamine Stakes winner Moonwalk was anything like Tapitsfly, Romans replied, “They have similar running styles and similar attitudes. It just a matter of whether or not they have the same talent. Tapitsfly went on to legitimize her Breeders’ Cup by winning several grade 1s.”
Romans had been concerned with a minor foot issue that
Sustained was dealing with, but is crossing his fingers that it’s behind her.
“She looked really good this morning. We hope it’s all
behind us, but it’s one of those things that can always pop back up.”

Spring Venture – The
undefeated Spring Venture continued to make her trainer smile as she behaved
perfectly on Wednesday during her 1 1/2m gallop. Mark Casse hoped his grin
lasted through her lessons this week at the starting gate and in the paddock.
“She’s come here and done really well and we’re pleased with
her because she can be nasty and a little tough,” Casse said. “She’s been
perfect since she got here (on Sunday from Churchill Downs). It’s always
interesting when we school her, so hopefully, she’ll be good.”
Owned by Gary Barber and Stoneway Farm LLC, Spring Venture
heads to the Juvenile Fillies Turf as the 5-1 second choice on the morning line.
Tara From the Cape – Trainer
Todd Pletcher is hoping to rekindle the karma that got him the trophy in the
2010 Juvenile Fillies Turf with More Than Real when he sends Tara From the Cape
to the post in this year’s 1m event.
“She’s been out here a little over a month now,” said assistant trainer Mike McCarthy, supervising activities this week until Pletcher arrives. “She’s had two nice, solid works over the race course here – both the turf and the dirt.”
The daughter of Leroidesanimaux has had four starts – two on
grass and two on synthetics. She won a stakes race at Delaware on grass in her
first start for Pletcher.
“She seems to be handling everything as you’d like to see
them -- collected , training forwardly,” McCarthy said. “Her attitude and her
appetite are good. She might be overlooked a little.”
With a full field of 14 entered, the trip may be the most
important factor in determining a winner.
“It’ll be a little crowded, that’s for sure,” McCarthy said.

Watsdachances – The Irish-bred daughter of Diamond Green galloped 1
1/2m on the main track for trainer Chad Brown Wednesday morning.
Watsdachances
broke her maiden in Ireland in April and was sent to Brown. She won the P.G.
Johnson at Saratoga in August and the Miss Grillo at Belmont en route to the
Breeders’ Cup.
“Peter
Bradley found this horse and she has been a wonderful horse since the day she
stepped into our barn this summer,” Brown said. “We pointed her to the P.G.
Johnson all summer and she delivered. She had been training super going into
that race and she ran like she had trained.
“Going into
the Miss Grillo she had to face totally opposite conditions, yielding turf. She
overcame it; tough trip, split horses; a real professional horse for a
2-year-old. And I love the way she’s been training.”
