Aviate Relishes Churchill Downs Turf

Horses bred in Great Britain tend to enjoy turf courses with some give in the ground and such was the case in Saturday's Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (Grade 2).

Even though the turf was listed as firm jockey Kent Desormeaux said the past two days that there was definitely some give in the ground and Aviate stormed from off the pace to win the flat mile turf affair on the Derby undercard.

Bill Mott has been struggling a bit this year and it was nice to see him score a graded triumph. Juddmonte Farms own and bred the 4-year-old daughter of Dansili. She just missed the place in her US bow at Gulfstream and looked good thundering down the stretch today.

Aruna returned from a layoff for Graham Motion and landed the place in a solid performance. She was followed by Fantasia, Zapparation, Kiss Mine, Never Retreat, Tapitsfly, Wild Mia, and Upperline.
