Atreides Pointed to Cigar Mile

Previously undefeated Atreides’ trip to Indiana Grand Race Course wasn’t nearly as successful as East Hall’s. The Marty Wolfson-trained 3-year-old was never a factor in the Indiana Derby, finishing sixth as the even-money favorite on Saturday night.

"It was the lights and the two turns,” Wolfson said. “The lights really seemed to bother him. The lights really startled him.”

Wolfson hasn’t lost any confidence in the son of Medaglia d’Oro, who had previously registered three consecutive 100-plus Beyer Speed Figures while winning his first three starts, all around one turn at Gulfstream Park.

“We’re looking at the Cigar Mile,” said Wolfson, referring to the $500,000 Grade 1 race at Aqueduct on Nov. 22. “It’s a one-turn mile.”
