At long last, Derby Sire Future Wager nears payout

Bettors that waded into the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager pool, which closed back on Dec. 1, certainly weren’t counting on a nine-month hold of their wagering capital. Yet in this year of pandemic, that will be the case when the gates finally spring open for the 2020 Kentucky Derby on Sept. 5.

In the one and only Derby Sire Future Wager pool, 23 individual sires were listed along with a “mutuel field” option that includes all other sires. The “field” closed as the favorite at 9-2, slightly shorter than the 5-1 price on Constitution — the sire of Kentucky Derby favorite Tiz the Law.

For those that got down on Constitution, they will be holding a healthy overlay — Tiz the Law figures as the prohibitive favorite, potentially as low as even money.

For “field” bettors, they are likely to have six chances in the Kentucky Derby. The expected Derby sires who were not listed as individual betting interests are Court Vision (Storm the Court), Cross Traffic (Ny Traffic), Dialed In (Finnick the Fierce), Ghostzapper (Major Fed), Karakonite (Sole Volante) and Paynter (Winning Impression).

Three sires are projected to have multiple representatives in the Kentucky Derby. The shortest price of that trio at 12-1 is Uncle Mo, who will have a couple of mid-priced runners in King Guillermo and Caracaro.

Honor Code, who closed at 19-1, will be represented by both Honor A.P. — one of the expected betting favorites — and Max Player, who was installed at 15-1 on Horse Racing Nation’s early betting line.

Also with a pair of contenders is Hard Spun, who closed the future wager 31-1. He is the sire of expected longshots Attachment Rate and Necker Island.

In addition to the win pool, Churchill Downs also offered an exacta as part of the Derby Sire Future Wager. You can view the full payout grid here.

For those that got down, your wait is almost over.
